How to Set Up a Travel eSIM on iPhone

A travel eSIM can be installed successfully while your iPhone still uses the wrong line for mobile data. This guide separates the checks before purchase, the installation process and the first connection at your destination. It is for Pakistani travellers using a data-only travel plan; your provider’s activation instructions remain the reference for the individual order.
Check the exact iPhone before ordering
Confirm eSIM support for your exact model and the country where that model was sold. Imported versions can differ, so the model name alone is not a sufficient check. Connect to reliable Wi-Fi for installation and use the latest iOS version supported by your phone. Apple’s eSIM setup guidance explains the supported activation methods and regional differences.
To check whether another carrier can be used, open Settings, choose General and then About. Look beside Carrier Lock: No SIM restrictions indicates that the phone is unlocked. If it is locked, contact the current carrier. Buying a travel eSIM does not unlock a phone, and Apple cannot perform a carrier unlock. See Apple’s carrier-unlock instructions.
Separate installation from the start of validity
Before scanning anything, ask when the quoted plan starts: purchase, installation or the first supported network connection. Also confirm any deadline for installing it. A plan with a fixed validity period can become unsuitable if you activate it too early. Keep the order confirmation available offline so you can check these conditions when airport Wi-Fi is unreliable.
For example, a traveller leaving Pakistan for a seven-day Saudi Arabia trip should confirm coverage for the actual destination and dates, the data allowance, the start trigger and hotspot rules. This is a planning example, not a Chandu Digital package or price offer. If the phone will also provide data to another traveller’s laptop, ask about tethering before choosing the allowance.
Install the profile using the supplied method
- Connect the intended iPhone to a dependable Wi-Fi network. Keep the provider’s instructions and the activation code ready privately.
- If supplied with a QR code, show it on another trusted screen and scan it with the iPhone Camera. Open the cellular-plan notification and follow the installation prompts.
- If a supported email app or browser displays the code on the same iPhone, Apple describes a press-and-hold method on iOS 17.4 or later that offers Add eSIM. Availability depends on the app and iOS version.
- For a provider app, activation link or manual details, use that provider’s specified method. Do not substitute an unrelated QR code or guess activation details.
- Give the new line a recognisable label such as Travel Data so that it is easy to distinguish from your Pakistani SIM.
Treat the QR code as an access credential. Do not publish it in comments, send it to an unrelated seller or include it in an unredacted screenshot. The instructions above summarise Apple’s QR-code activation guidance; they do not guarantee that every provider allows installation or transfer in the same way.
Choose the data line when you arrive
In Settings, open Cellular or Mobile Data, then the mobile-data selection and choose the travel line. Confirm that the travel line is enabled. Apply the roaming and network settings supplied for that particular eSIM; do not assume identical settings across providers. Before using data, check which line is selected rather than relying on the signal bars alone.
Decide separately whether to keep your home line active for calls or messages. A data-only eSIM does not provide ordinary calls, SMS or a local number unless the confirmed plan says otherwise. Keeping the Pakistani line active can incur home-carrier roaming charges. Confirm those charges with your carrier and review settings that could move data onto the home line. Apple explains travel eSIM and dual-line behaviour.
Diagnose a problem before deleting the eSIM
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Installation will not complete | Check Wi-Fi, the exact error message, model support and whether the supplied activation details are still valid. |
| The line appears but has no service | Check the destination is covered, the plan is valid and the line is enabled. Ask the provider which network settings apply. |
| Signal appears but webpages fail | Confirm that mobile data uses the travel line, then check the remaining allowance and provider instructions. |
| A second scan is rejected | Ask the provider about reuse or reinstallation. Do not delete the installed profile as a first troubleshooting step. |
Apple recommends simple activation checks such as toggling Airplane Mode, switching an existing line off and on, restarting the phone and reviewing available carrier updates. After each change, check the result before trying the next. See Apple’s eSIM troubleshooting guide. Avoid a factory reset for a routine enquiry.
What to send when asking for help
Send your order reference, destination, exact phone model, iOS version, whether the travel line appears in settings and the error wording. Hide QR codes, passwords and full device identifiers in general screenshots. This gives support a useful starting point without exposing the activation credential.
